Types of Lasers available for Tattoo Removal
Q-switched Nd:YAG Lasers (532nm and 1064nm)
1064nm
The long 1064nm wavelength has the deepest penetration and carries the least risk of hypopigmentation. It is the most effective on black ink but is also the least effective in removing brightly colored pigments.
This wavelength may also be useful when residual, more deeply placed ink particles are all that remain.
532nm
The 532nm wavelength (green light) This wavelength is also effective for red, orange, and occasionally yellow ink.
This wavelength is absorbed by hemoglobin, and as a result, blistering frequently occurs after treatment.
The Q-Switched Nd:YAG Lasers usually have a pulse duration of between 3 to 15ns
Q-switched Ruby Laser (694nm)
For the removal of black, blue, and green inks.
Because this wavelength is well absorbed by melanin injury to melanocytes can lead to transient hypopigmentation and even depigmentation as well as textural change.
Q-Switched Ruby Lasers pulse duration usually 15 to 40ns
Q-switched Alexandrite Laser (755nm)
For removing black, blue, and green inks.
The Alexandrite laser system is reportedly not as successful as the other models.
High rates of hypopigmentation have been reported in treated subjects, which is usually resolved within several months of treatment.
Q-Switched Alexandrite Lasers have a pulse duration of usually around 50ns, the longest of all the Q-Switched Lasers.
Pico Lasers
Pico Lasers are the latest technology, Picoseconds are shorter than the the Q-Switched lasers nanoseconds which can break down the ink into even smaller particles than QS lasers, reducing treatment sessions while creating less thermal damage.
The first Pico laser on the market was 755nm Alexandrite, so suitable for removing black, blue, and green inks.
The next generation of Pico Lasers uses the Nd:YAG 1064nm and 532nm wavelengths to treat blacks and red, and orange.
Being the latest technology Pico lasers are the most expensive to buy.
The lasers currently sold by Eclipse Lasers Ltd are Q-Switched Nd:YAG
